Anal fissure is a tear in the skin of the anal canal which causes extreme pain in the anal canal. Anal fissures generally increase from the anal opening. They are predominantly ascribed to fecal bacteria, constipation or by protract diarrhea. Anal fissures are extremely frequent in growing children and new born infants but can affect people of any age. Mostly anal fissures get better with simple treatment, such as, increased fiber intake or sitz bath. It can be caused due to extreme physical activity or any accident.

Anal fissures are quite common, occurring in about 110 people for every 100,000. It is a tear in the thin, moist tissue (mucosa) that lines the anus. It may occur due to the passing of hard or large stools. Anal fissures cause pain, bleeding, and discomfort during bowel movements. There may be spasms in the ring of muscles at the end of the anus (anal sphincter). Most anal fissures get better with simple treatments such as increased fiber intake or sitz baths. Some people with anal fissures may recover with the help of medication, but an acute anal fissure may require the employment of lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS), which is found to be very effective compared to other means of cure.
