An implant is a medical process used to replace, support or enhance an existing biological structure. It is different from medical transplant in a way that these are man-made devices whereas transplant procedure involves transplanting biomedical tissues. Some of the biomedical material used for the implant are silicone, titanium, apatite etc. An artificial pacemaker is an example of implants containing electronics.
Healthcare centers and hospitals are the main users of this technology. Bio-implants are widely used for treatments of cardiovascular, dental, orthopedic, neurology and ophthalmic diseases. Sensory implants help in the treatment of nerve and brain disorder. Bio-implants like cardiac rhythm management (CRM), stents and prosthetic heart valves are used for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. One of the major implication of orthopedic implant is to support the damaged bone joints. Cosmetic implants are primarily being used to maintain the aesthetic form of the body.
Advancement in bio-implant technology, rising need for less invasive surgical procedures, the aging population, increasing demand for cosmetic implants are the main driving force for the growth of the bio-implant market. On the other hand lack of awareness among people, insufficiently trained professionals, high cost, and stringent Govt. regulations are some of the primary restraints. The interaction between the implant and surrounding tissue can create complication which includes infection, pain, and inflammation. Because of these reasons many medical practitioners don't prefer bio-implants.
Bio-implant market can be segmented based on the product application which includes cardiovascular bio implants (i.e. stents, pacing devices), dental bio implants, orthopedic bioimplants (i.e. orthobiologics, trauma implants etc.), spinal bio impacts (i.e. thoracolumbar implants, intervertebral spacers, motion preservation implants etc.), and ophthalmology bio implants (i.e. glaucoma treatment). Apart from the above-mentioned products cosmetic implants are gaining popularity day by day. It is widely used as a follow up to mastectomy due to breast cancer.
North America is the market leader followed by Europe and Asia Pacific. Technological advancement, venture capital investment, govt support and increasing demand ensure North America's leadership in the bio-implant market. High purchasing power and disposable income in North America and Europe also ensure the market growth. Investors and manufacturers are highly interested in Asia Pacific regions due to the presence of untapped market with lots of opportunities. Other geographic markets include South America, Japan, and Middle East & Africa.
Technological advancement, Govt. support and increasing awareness among people are creating lots of opportunities in the current market. Research is going on to remove the complication arising from the interaction between implant and surrounding tissues. The highest growth rate is expected to be in the Asia Pacific region in the forecasted period. Various R&D work in critical disease sector and complex surgical procedures are also creating opportunities for the market to grow.
Some of the major players in the market include Stryker Corporation, Boston Scientific Corporation, Depuy Synthes, St. Jude Medical Inc, Tornier N.V., Medtronic, St. Jude Medical, Inc. (U.S.), Wright Medical Group, Biomet Inc, Smith and Nephew and Invibio Biomaterial Solutions.
